Course Overview - SoLa Studios is a South LA film production program designed for a new generation of Black and brown storytellers. We provide an unrivaled approach to hands-on, interactive learning, where Tech Scholars are immersed in their course of study from day one. Award-winning industry professionals teach classes, and Tech Scholars have access to a complete creative studio with state-of-the-art equipment and will walk away from the program with professional-level film production skills.  

Intro Course Description - The intro course explores the art of visual storytelling and provides a solid introduction to all aspects of film production. The course starts by examining the art of storytelling through photography and video and how to harness the medium to communicate your message correctly. After completing this course, Tech Scholars will have a strong understanding of the roles of a production crew, digital storytelling techniques, basic proficiency in operating professional video/photo cameras, and editing in Adobe Premiere Pro. Tech Scholars will leave the program with finished video projects to add to their portfolios. This program requires strong commitment, and all applicants will undergo an interview before being accepted. 

Course Learning Objectives: 

  • Learn the fundamentals of storytelling and the power of images and video
  • Become Proficient in using Sony a7siii video and photo camera
  • Become proficient in using production gear, including a tripod, gimbal, studio lights,  and wireless livelier 
  • Understand the basics of cinematography and camera movements 
  • Learn how to work with other Tech Scholars on a production crew 
  • Become proficient in using a MacBook Pro and editing on Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Learn how to organize and import footage, create projects, and export video projects
  • Learn how to film in slow-motion and slow-motion edit clips 
  • Learn the basics of color correction, adding titles and lower thirds, and sound mixing
  • Learn how to create a completed video by incorporating footage, music, audio, color, and titles.

Commitment Acknowledgment - This in-person course requires a strong commitment. All applicants will undergo the interview process prior to receiving course acceptance. Please note this registration does not guarantee enrollment in this course.

Entrepreneurship (ages 11-18 yrs)

In this course, students will develop an entrepreneurial mindset and skills they can use in everyday life. They will gain foundational skills and knowledge needed to launch a business, from recognizing a need and creatively solving a problem to developing an actionable business plan.  

The course is comprised of three modules:

  • Creative Problem-Solving module, students learn and apply Design Thinking, an innovative process for problem-solving used by both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs to brainstorm customer-centric ideas. This process focuses on the user’s needs and experiences by creating empathy maps, problem statements, prototypes, and testing plans to validate a product or service idea. 
  • Think Like an Entrepreneur module, students explore the traits of an entrepreneurial mindset needed by both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs when solving problems and evaluating opportunities. An entrepreneurial self-assessment supports students in identifying their strengths and setting personal and professional goals. 
  • Rapid Business Planning module, students learn how to put their product or service idea into action by creating a concise yet effective one-page business plan. This iterative approach to business planning enables students to develop, test, and validate their plans with customers while filling an unmet market need.  

Scholars will receive cumulative benefits through the exploration of creative problem-solving, the entrepreneurial mindset, and business planning.

Esports - Valorant 

Middle & High School Ages 11-18 yrs / Monday's

Esports Valorant is designed to give each Scholar the feeling of participating in real season-long competitions. With weekly training sessions and daily replay reviews, players of all skill levels will be given individual training techniques catered directly to them. With scholars being divided by skill levels, all Tech Scholars can compete in competitions based on their abilities. All Tech Scholars will leave the course with competition experience and a deeper understanding of incorporating different techniques to improve their gameplay beyond simple time allocation. Participants also enhance their leadership, communication, sportsmanship, and discipline skills with 1:1 coaching and team-building activities. All High-School competitors can compete in the official national High School Esports ‘Valorant’ League, allowing them to leap into careers as professional gamers. 

By the end of the course, you will: 

Develop team collaboration and balance team composition

Learn and understand gaming basics, terminology, and third-party applications 

Learn how to communicate with teammates

Enhancing computer literacy (understanding DPI, Mouse acceleration, Sensitivity)

Be introduced to Esports Tournament Formats and play-ins

Understand how to conduct 1:1 Replay Reviews

Intermediate Course Description

Making The Band is designed to take beginner musicians and music lovers to the next level. Tech Scholars will advance their knowledge of music theory and then put it into practice through jams sessions and recording. In the first half of the course, scholars immerse themselves in learning the basics of song form and instruments such as guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums. The second half of this course is designed to prepare tech scholars to craft their own set. Additionally, musicians will have an opportunity to collaborate with each other on arrangements and genre choices. 

The course culminates in a an ensemble performance with a set arranged by the Tech Scholars over the course of 12 weeks. 

Tech Scholars who playhorn, wind, or string instruments are strongly encouraged to register.

By the end of the course, your scholars will:

Understand Music theory

Proper instrument maintenance, & minor repairs

Developing arrangements to match skill level

Proper practice techniques to improve your chops

Understanding the nuances of genre and the sub-genre

Develop active listening skills

Program Overview - The SoLa I CAN Foundation is partnering with Live Nation Entertainment to train a new generation of Black and brown industry professionals from South LA. The Live Nation NextGen paid apprenticeship program's 20 Tech Scholars (ages 16-21) explore career pathways in the live music industry through technical training and mentorship from industry insiders. In each session, Tech Scholars will have the opportunity to deploy their newly acquired skills as they produce a festival of their own. 

Program Description - This program aims to provide a deep look into "Live," the exciting world of concerts and music festivals. Tech Scholars learn what it takes to organize and promote at the highest level. The course begins with an overview of each element of the planning and execution of the world's biggest music festivals. Hands-on workshops supplemented with renowned guest speakers help highlight the various opportunities available within the music industry.

Tech Scholars get a chance to discover career paths that they may have never known existed. At the end of the 6-month session, every Tech Scholar will have comprehensive knowledge of booking, production, merchandise, sponsorships, ticketing, and much more! 

This in-person program requires strong commitment, and all applicants will undergo an interview before being accepted. Please note that registration does not guarantee enrollment.


  • Hear firsthand from industry professionals and executives what it takes to excel 
  • Understand the fundamentals of marketing, promotion, and branding related to concerts and music festivals.
  • Learn how to work with others as you divide your workload and execute a fully ticketed music festival together with a brand of your own
  • Familiarize yourself with the different roles and responsibilities of festival staff on the day of an event
  • Learn what it means to work hand in hand with artists and the teams that are behind them
  • Learn about revenue and the world of sponsorships and activations

Intro Course Description

 Music Production I covers the different elements of music production, composition and mastering, down through distribution. Scholars will learn how technology can aid recording and the creative process. This course intends to produce engineers capable of guiding a project from notes on paper to mastering an album aiming towards the heights of J Dilla, The Neptunes, 9th Wonder, Rick Rubin, Phil Spektor, Timbaland, Jeff Bhasker and Quincy Jones.

By the end of the course, your scholars will:

Understand music theory in music production.

Understand music engineering with industry tool, such as Pro-Tools

Understand Logic recording software

Using audio input vs output

Categorizing differences between musical genres/sub-genres 

Develop skills in arrangement and song form

Develop skills in project management and leadership

Cyber Security/IT Basics

Course Description

Our daily lives have been built off the technology’s ability to connect us with our loved ones, customers, and the world at-large. But we often take security for granted. This course offers tech scholars an opportunity to learn how to defend against these cyber vulnerabilities, while competing in a national competition called Cyber Patriot. The second half of this course is designed to prepare the Tech Scholar to take the CompTIA IT Fundamentals certification exam, a professional-level certificate that is standard in the cyber security industry. Instruction includes IT literacy, environmental and safety concepts, operating systems, software, hardware, networking, alternative technologies, security, and computational thinking. Tech Scholars utilize the skills and evolving needs of today’s modern workplace to analyze and solve problems within the IT industry. 

By the end of the course, your scholars will:

  • Windows/Linux/Mac OS troubleshooting
  • Networking Hardware Maintenance/troubleshooting
